Where a steady tone's energy went after a periodic modulation was applied to it.
A carrier whose level (or any parameter) is moved by a periodic law at modulation_hz carries all of its energy at the carrier and at the carrier +/- k times that frequency: the sidebands are the modulation, and anything else in the band is what the modulation PATH added – a stepper's hold images, the fold of a modulation the path sampled too slowly to represent, noise. The two ratios are the A/B of a modulation path: a faithful path reads a high sideband_db and a residual_db at the floor a run without modulation establishes.
